Coralku launches virtual reality awareness campaign

26 Feb 2024

New VR method allows non-divers to experience Malaysian reefs

Visitors to the Dive, Resort, and Travel (DRT) Expo 2024 in Kuala Lumpur were transported beneath the waves of Pulau Lang Tengah—without getting wet. For the first time, Coralku introduced a Virtual Reality (VR) experience, allowing guests to explore the vibrant reefs and restoration sites of Pulau Lang Tengah.

Equipped with VR headsets, curious divers, conservationists, and ocean enthusiasts immersed themselves in 360-degree underwater footage showcasing vibrant reef patches and Coralku's restoration efforts. This experience provided a rare, close-up look at how coral fragments are propagated underwater onto degraded reefs—a process many understand theoretically but seldom witness in action.

Our goal was to bring the reef to people who might never get to dive. It is not just about education—it is about connection. When corals are seen up close, and people understand the work that goes into restoring them, people care more deeply about protecting them.

The VR booth quickly became a crowd favorite at the expo, especially among children, sparking conversations around marine conservation, coral restoration, and the urgent need to safeguard Malaysia's reefs amid climate threats.
