MARS and Coralku Launch a New Science-Driven Coral Restoration Partnership

21 Apr 2026

Coralku is proud to launch a new partnership with MARS Sustainable Solutions through the project “Functional Rebuild of High Value Reefs with Coral Nucleation Patch Network.”  As part of the project, we will deploy 400 Reef Stars and plant approximately 5,000 corals, creating a network of new coral-covered patches across high-value reef areas. The Reef Stars will help stabilise degraded reef substrate while providing a foundation for coral growth and the recovery of reef-associated biodiversity. The MARRS approach similarly uses interconnected Reef Stars to stabilise rubble fields and create platforms where transplanted corals can grow and eventually become integrated into the reef structure.

But this project is designed to go beyond putting corals back on the reef.

The Reef Stars will be strategically configured to create opportunities for genotype-specific spawning clusters in the future. This will allow us to track and study genetically identified coral colonies, investigate their reproductive performance, and potentially use their offspring in future sexual propagation and restoration efforts.

We are grateful to MARS Sustainable Solutions for providing the seed funding that has made this initiative possible and for supporting an approach that looks beyond restoring coral cover alone. This partnership gives us an opportunity to explore how restored reefs can also become platforms for research, innovation and the development of new pathways towards coral resilience.

Project impact at a glance:

  • 400 Reef Stars to be deployed

  • ~5,000 corals to be planted

  • Functional reef habitat rebuilt across high-value reef areas

  • Genotype-specific clusters established for spawning future research

  • Potential sexual propagation pathways incorporated into the restoration design

Restoring reefs is not simply about replacing what has been lost. It is about building the knowledge, partnerships and living systems needed for reefs to persist into the future.

We are excited to work with MARS to explore what the next generation of coral restoration can look like — combining scale, science and innovation to rebuild functional reefs.
