Coral Reef Ecology & Resilience
From community ecology, to tracing coral reef health and even uncovering new species - our researchers & partners are committed to the process of science & discovery in order to improve scientific knowledge & governance of Malaysian coral reefs.
Did you know that Malaysian coral reefs are some of the most data deficient? Here at Coralku, we have been surveying and monitoring coral reefs since our trial phase in 2018. Our studies focus on changes in coral reef health, population ecology and studies that investigate just how well the current population is structured to reproduce and survive (population demography). These studies also allow us to determine how resilient our coral reefs are.
We have come a long way, and we do not intend to stop. Unbelievably, in 2021, we believe to have come across a new species of Blue Coral! It has been a fascinating time to study these hardly explored reefs and we are currently about to publish the first results of these studies. We have provided the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DoF) with detailed reports on our findings, and some of our initial data has been featured in the biggest coral reef health report until to date - the 2020 Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) report.
